OAMRT Annual General Meeting and Conference, April 30 - May 2, 2010, Crowne Plaza Hotel, Ottawa
OAMRT continues to work with Ministry of Health & Long-Term Care politicians and staff in regard to protecting patients from unnecessary radiations, in partnership with the HARP Commission, to modernize the HARP Act. We have concerns that some professions, based on the evidence we have, that seek to order and assess DI examinations do not have the training and education necessary to do that in a competent manner. In reality, MRTs have the competencies and far more experience in assessing anatomy and pathology on an image and are the experts in radiation protection and biology. We are advocating that those professions seeking a change to their scope of practice achieve the requisite competencies to protect the public/patients and that administrators and managers have in place the appropriate policies, procedures and guidelines to ensure that nurses and others who have been given the right to order and assess images actually are competent to do so.
Bill 179 has proposed that all MRTs have Professional Liability Insurance (PLI) and the likely hood of this being passed is high. The OAMRT/CAMRT Membership provides this ( includes malpractice, CMRTO disciplinary hearings, criminal code defence coverage and costs for coroner's inquests). Non-OAMRT/CAMRT Members do not likely have PLI especially in the IHF (clinic) sector so joining us to day will ensure you meet the incoming legal requirements for PLI.
The Association is lobbying government to include in the proposed new Scope of Practice Statement for the Profession under Bill 179 that the requested portion be reinserted dealing with 'assessing the patient before, during and after the Procedure'
See the new on-line continuing professional development (CPD ) courses we have developed for MRTs ( Non-Members pay more). We are also in the process of developing more. Want a course in contrast media injection at a site near you or take a certificate course in BMD? Explore what we have.
